Independence Rock

Independence Rock

Retired-geezerRetired geezer in Casper, WY
Poison-spider-roadI spent a lot of time on this road. Great name, huh?
Weird-cowI have no idea what this animal is
Pet-cemeteryI have no idea what the story behind this sign is
AntelopeI see antelope multiple times a day now, usually bounding across the road
Muddy-crossingThere was still a lot of mud on the road after last weekends’s rains.
CattleMore cattle crossings. They get very cranky when I try to pass through them, mooing up a storm. They probably aren’t dangerous, but they are very large.
Prospect-hillView west from the top of Prospect Hill
Pony-express-prospect-hillPony Express marker at the top of Prospect Hill
Trail-swaleMarked trail ruts on Pathfinder Ranch
PathfinderPathfinder Ranch, huge landholder in the Independence Rock area.
PuddlesMore puddles. Many of these were lined in white crust, signifying alkali, I think.
Lost-trailI lost the trail here through Pathfinder Ranch (which is kind of ironic). If the bike and looking for tracks.
Independence-rock-eastIndependence Rock from the east.
Independence-rock-westIndependence Rock from the west, where the visitor’s center and rest area are.
Independence-rock-campMy camp, across the highway from Independence Rock. Trucks and RVs stayed in the rest area all night, but tents aren’t allowed.

About

Scott AlumbaughIn early March 2020, I decided to bikepack the length of the Pony Express Trail in Summer 2021, following the Pony Express Bikepacking Route, a nearly all off-road route created by Jan Bennett. You can learn more here >
