Express Rider’s Clothing

The riders wore their own clothing, perhaps a buckskin hunting shirt or one of red flannel, cloth trousers, high boots, a jockey cap or slouch hat. There were no uniforms. They carried only what they needed, only what was absolutely necessary. Armed at first with a Spencer or Sharps rifle and two Colt revolvers, the riders eventually carried only a single Colt, often with an additional cylinder of ammunition.
